Emily Muli: ‘Rhythm & Truth’

Released on International Women’s Day 2018, ‘Rhythm & Truth’ packed elements of hip hop, R&B, and soul into an infectious 3 minute jam. The tune also encapsulated rich history, belief, and heritage, with Muli giving nods to her Pacific roots.

The development alumni says the song is about being “unashamedly yourself in everything you do.”

“We live in a society that is heavily influenced by trends, media perceptions and automated algorithms based on superficial things, so to be authentic in who you are can sometimes feel uncomfortable because you're going against the grain in that context. But it's worth it, because what you end up giving the world is nothing but your truth, and no one can change that.”

Impressively, Muli recorded the track during a busy 2018 which saw her touring the country with R&B singer Aaradhna, completing a double degree in Commerce and Music, and speaking at Humanitarian events around the country. Muli was also a recipient of NZ on Air’s inaugural Pacific Music grant earlier this year.

‘Rhythm & Truth’ was recorded at Parachute Studios and produced by Nic Manders (Brooke Fraser, Katchafire, Lydia Cole).

daily j: ‘black lagoon’

Development alumni Daily J have just dropped their new tune ‘Black Lagoon’, and it’s already being lapped up by the airwaves, with Radio Hauraki showing love for the song’s “highly addictive chorus, chaotic indie-pop-rock beats and velvet melodies.”

Working with producer Joe Faris (Ezra Vine), the band channel the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Gorrilaz, and Tame Impala for the swaggering song, which has just ticked over 37k plays on Spotify, and featured on several of their tastemaking playlists.

The accompanying video was directed and edited by Taylor Mansfield, who has worked with the likes of Sachi, Bene and LA Women.

The boys have just hit Parachute Studios with Faris to record a follow-up EP.
